Ad Astra
Commissioned work
Role: Design and Art Direction
Ad Astra is a bed and breakfast business located in a Limbourg, Belgium. An hour and a half drive from Brussels, it is surrounded by majestic country scenes albeit being close to the city. The accommodation is a 17th century house with a shared terrace complete with modern amenities.
Ad Astra is a latin phrase meaning "to the stars". Whilst it may be obvious to start designing around the brand's name, the most striking facet of this business and its story is in fact, the house.
The brand identity design is based on its iconic facade with is bricks, the door and its two windows above. I worked with the client to make sure we capture just enough detail.
To the stars
I added the stars as the accent surround the main focal of the brand design. This element provided a visual relationship to the brand name while not overpowering the main focal and context of the business.
Colours and typography
The colours were inspired by the elements of the location and its story: the rustic red from the bricks; gold from the stars; and the deep blue twilight sky. Pairing it with a serif like Cardo, elevates its look and feel, and most importantly connects the visual together effectively.
If you fancy a holiday around this area, Christmas time is one of the best season to visit where the nearby city hosts a big Christmas market.
